Magazine Demographics
My brain is bleeding! Desperately looking for “standard” magazine ad rates?

I am trying to help a business associate do some forecasting for a magazine he’d like to start up. I know there are all sorts of variables (demographics, subscriptions, etc., etc., etc.) but isn’t there a national “standard” rate per 1,000 subscribers? in other words, if he has 1,000 to start with he can charge X for a full-page/half/quarter, etc… Later, if he has 2,500 subscribers he can charge Y… 5,000 can charge Z, and so on. i’ve been at this for four hours and can only find what specific magazines charge and, of course, they’ve got a big enough audience that they don’t go to 1,000. Yes, I know there is a difference between subscribers and distribution numbers, I’m just looking for some sort of “official” or “standard” rate. I’ve Yahoogled this to death and I’ve even tried Bing and Ask. No luck! I figure it’s GOT to be out there, I’m just not using the exact right term or something. Grrr!

No, there is no standard rate.
My recommendation is that you carefully research the rates of competing publications and set prices accordingly.
Your prospective advertisers will be making those same comparisons.
