Canceling an illegitimate contract?

Alright, long story short I was roped into a verbal contract for a magazine subscription from a company claiming to be allied with my credit card company. Upon signing this contract, I asked them if I could cancel this agreement and they said yes. I have tried many times since, and the best they’ve done is knock off $5 per month to my subscriptions. Through research on this scam (United Readers Service Inc) I’ve learned of people getting legal help to convince them to dissolve their contract for their dubious ways of obtaining subscribers.

My question is, does anyone know of a good database or method of obtaining legal counsel on dissolving contracts or something of the like? Much appreciated.

Some telemarketing Magazine Companies are notorious for refusing to honor “implied” cancellation opportunites for their oftentimes thousand dollar (or more) multi-year, multi-magazine subscriptions – even in situations that cancellation is guaranteed by law.

Since the legality of verbal contracts and consumer cancellation rights and responsibilities can vary by state, contact your local consumer protection organization or Attorney General’s office for answers to your specific situation. Free options for arbitration assistance can include CPAs or the Better Business Bureau, as well as, the option of retaining a consumer law advocate (for possibly more than the cost of Your Magazine account). While the Federal Trade Commission and AGs do not intervene on behalf of individual consumers, reporting unacceptable business practices (in your state and theirs) may show patterns that can trigger official investigations and potentially protect future unwary victims.

• Local CPA offices: http://consumeraction.gov/state.shtml
• Find any AG: http://naag.org/current-attorneys-general.php
• File BBB complaints: https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/getstarted.aspx
• Find a consumer law advocate: http://naca.networkats.com/members_online/members/directorya.asp?token=
• File FTC complaints: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/

Also be aware that it is not unusual for other third-party companies to buy contact lists of magazine customers as potential prospects for other impulse buys or scams.

Beware and be ready as a defensive consumer!! , D/
