World Magazine For Kids
how was a childs life before world war 2?

the toys they had, the books and magazines …what type of cartoons they watched and how this differs from our life today and how kids are enjoying it.the schools they went to..

In the U.S. before World War II , families were trying to recover from the Great Depression. People were just getting back on their feet financially so there wasn’t much affluence . They did not watch cartoons except in the movies since regular network television did not start in the U.S. until 1945. Toys were relatively simple then with balls, bats, dolls, bicycles and homemade toys.
There were board games such as Monopoly and card games like Rook and Flinch. Children invented their own games to play depending on the number of kids available to play. A variation of Hide and Go Seek was called Kick the Can with the person who was it kicking a can that was loud enough for everyone to know they were starting to hunt for you. Children had to help around the house more then since even food preparation took a great deal more time than it does now. There were no dishwashers and even doing laundry was more time consuming with the need to hang the clothes on the line outdoors to dry. There were several comic books being produced then such as Superman and Captain Marvel. Dick Tracy . Little Orphan Annie and Blondie and Dagwood were popular newspaper cartoons.
Schools were very basic with the teaching of reading, writing, math, history and geography. Only more progressive city schools had art and music . Those were only available in most schools if the teacher happened to provide them. In country schools they often did not exist at all. Though this sounds bleak in comparison to today’s schools, I doubt if you would find many people who don’t look on those years as the best of times.
